We’ve all have those terrible Uh-Oh moments. Moments when you know things are going to go terribly terribly wrong. Example: You put a big spoonful of soup in your mouth and instantly know the soup is way too hot to eat. Or your dentist enters the exam room whistling “You Always Hurt The One You Love.” So I gave my audience a couple hours of Uh-Oh moments (as if I don’t do that every week…).

I’ve been having trouble adjusting to Daylight Savings Time going away. They said we’d gain an hour. We did. We gained an extra hour of darkness. My body doesn’t know when to wake up or when to fall asleep – although falling asleep is something I never discuss in front of my audience. So I tried a little night time music therapy to help me make it through the night.

Sure, I promised my audience a special April 1st show with a new recording of Rod Stewart singing “Nessun Dorma,” a YouTube video of The Boy’s Choir of Galway Cathedral singing in Gaelic, “99 Bottles Of Beer On The Wall,” plus a bootleg from a Joni Mitchell recording session where Joni is aiming a profanity-lace rant at her assistant who gave her the wrong bottle of spring water. What do these things have in common: a pogo stick, a diving board, a trampoline?  Three things I wouldn’t be caught dead on? True but not what I was thinking. The three worst golden anniversary gifts? Also true but I couldn’t get two hours of music out of that. Answer: they all have springs! And that’s what I celebrated with two hours of Spring songs, with a nod to Spring planting with Mark Jennett, Spring Fever with Gretje Angell, and Spring cleaning with Kevin Mahogany. March 17th was National Sleep Day – the last holiday in the world I’d like my audience to celebrate. Fortunately, it was also St. Patrick’s Day. That’s more like it. So I presented a mixture of laughter and tears, a perfect combination for a St. Patrick’s Day celebration. Although, in truth, most of the tears were mine because once again I maintained my tradition of eating a celebratory bowl of Lucky Charms on the air. (Lucky Charms are now gluten-free. It didn’t help.)  Still, it was a grand night of Irish and Irish-American singers and a chance to celebrate the music of Jimmy McHugh.

PLAYLIST FOR “HERE’S TO THE (GRACIOUS!) LOSERS (10.1.22)

A couple of weeks ago I was watching a college football game.  The final score was pretty humiliating – 77 to 21.  And after the game, do you know what the losing coach said?  “We lost.”   He didn’t say, the game was rigged or it was stolen.  He didn’t say someone in Venezuela or somewhere tampered with the scoreboard.  He just said, “We lost.  And it reminded me of a time long long ago when people actually admitted defeat, honestly and graciously. So I wanted to give them a little love and give a musical salute to all the gracious losers. Of course I tossed in a few sore losers just for comparison sake.

Axiom…Thumb…Under…Triad -I know, it sounds like some words I missed on a sixth grade spelling test. Well, they’re also words I’ve been using to play the addictive, time-suck word game, Wordle, figuring out the five-letter word of the day. Probably many in my audience play Wordle during my show. You can imagine how happy I am not to have their full attention. Putting that aside, I offered them a bunch of five-letter words to improve their game. Who says public service radio is dead?

I desperately need a break. I desperately need something to celebrate. I tried to combine the two with a tribute to Spring. But not without first opening the show with another Ukrainian jazz artist. I’m watching the world fall apart but from a distance. Living in Kyiv, Alina’s view is terrifyingly closer. Yet she tells me she and her family are safe and trying to stay positive. Glory to Ukraine!
