PLAYLIST FOR “THINGS TO DO WHILE LISTENING” – AN ARCHIVE SHOW (12.31.16

PLAYLIST FOR “THINGS TO DO WHILE LISTENING TO TURNTABLE FOR ONE” (10.8.16)

10 Oct

It’s a multi-tasking world. For instance, I’m tap dancing while I type this (which could explain all of the typos). What does my audience do while listening to Turntable For One? They told me some of the things they do – the things they can’t be arrested for – and I gave them a few additional suggestions, too. A good time was had by all. (See below for proof.)

This week Ella Fitzgerald took on all comers in a head-to-head, well, really a voice-to-voice competition. She sang standards and some surprising duets; she even challenged Sarah Vaughan in a “forgetting the lyrics” competition (Sarah won) and challenged Shirley Horn to a “slow singing” competition (Shirley won). PLAYLIST FOR “THE (LOST) ART OF WRITING LETTERS” (5.14.16)

16 May

Remember when 140 characters meant a Tolstoy novel, not our major means of communicating with each other? Remember when Snail Mail referred to the gender of a specie, not to the U.S. Postal Service? Remember when a sound bite was an accident with the neighbor’s dog, not a statement by a politician? (Although you’d probably be wise to get a rabies shot after both of those events.) We seem to have lost a number of things these days – skills such as logic, empathy, listening. This week I thought I’d tackle the lost art of letter writing with a couple dozen wonderful songs and singers on the topic.

SOUNDS LIKE A PLAN

What’s the difference between a Dream and a Plan? Well, I’ve been having a lot of bad dreams lately, a lot of bad plans, too. Dreams aren’t real and they don’t come true…of course, most of my plans don’t come true, either. You know, maybe there’s no difference at all. Both of them end in disappointment and heartache – but not when singers like the ones I played are singing about plans they’re making!
