PLAYLIST FOR “SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN” (9.23.17)

24 Sep

I’ve been watching with horror the images of the millions of people whose only fault was being in the path of Harvey, Irma, Jose, and Maria. Will we ever be able to think about rain benignly again the way so many popular song writers have? To distract myself (the largest circle on my personal Venn diagram with a very small intersection with Reality), I spent a couple of hours living in the past.

PLAYLIST FOR “THE HEART WANTS WHAT IT WANTS” (5.6.17)

6 May

I believe human beings have one determinative principle – although principle seems to be a word that’s fallen from grace and practice these days. “The Heart Wants What It Wants” – Doesn’t that explain why people choose their partners, their meals, their cars, their politicians, and in the case of one of this week’s mystery vocalists, why he married his step-daughter. Emily Dickinson gave that phrase to the world in a letter.  I wonder if she would be happy about that today. I was happy about these songs for this week’s theme.

Most of these songs are losers, Oscar losers, that is.  (Though none of the singers and musicians are.)
