PLAYLIST FOR “A MUSICAL TRIBUTE TO THE TELEPHONE” (9.25.21)

26 Sep

This was the week of WMNR’s Fall Fundraising Drive and many of the broadcasters and staff took to the airwaves to ask, cajole, exhort, plead, beg for listeners to call in to make a pledge. I tried to be a little more laid back, subtle, and subliminal, playing songs with telephone in the title or lyrics. Plus I also asked, cajoled, exhorted, etc., etc. to make a few buck for the station. Wondering what Just In Time and The Party’s Over has to do with the telephone? I refer you to the synopsis of Bells Are Ringing.

Well, I didn’t quite make it in for the Fall season premiere. I’ll have to try that again next week. Instead we listened to a favorite show from a couple years ago. Here’s what I said about then:

PLAYLIST FOR “MIXED MESSAGES” (5.29.21)

31 May

Webster may be the champion of spellers and Fowler the God of Grammar, but my mother was the unchallenged monarch of the mixed message, offering such gems as “Is that a new haircut? Maybe your friends won’t notice.” “That’s a funny joke. Do you think anyone will get it?” “A new job? Wonderful. I hope it’s not too much for you.” (I could go on and on and on – but I think you get the idea.) So this week I gave my audience a masterclass in Mixed Messages, passing along some of Mom’s favorite techniques and strategies with the help of some mixed message song combinations by some unequivocally great singers.

PLAYLIST FOR “STOP, LOOK, AND LISTEN” (4.17.21)

18 Apr

In addition to playing songs about Stop, Look, & Listen, I spent much of the hour asking anyone who would listen to stop and look into their wallets – I mean into their hearts and make a donation to the WMNR Spring Fundraising Drive. It wasn’t all pleading and begging. After I played Billie Holiday’s blown Take 7 of Glad To Be Unhappy, I  gave the audience the opportunity to make a couple of donations if they wanted to hear the completed version. PLAYLIST FOR “A MUSICAL TRIBUTE TO THE ADVERB” (4.10.21)

11 Apr

Intelligently, flawlessly, compassionately, thrillingly, unbelievably – these are just a few of the words no one has ever used in describing how I put this show together. Why? Well, I’m going to tell myself that it’s because people just don’t know how to use adverbs. So clearly it’s time for another lesson in Making Grammar Great Again. That’s why I presented proudly, defiantly, fearlessly, and oh so timely, a musical tribute to Adverbs this week.

PLAYLIST FOR “REDUX” (3.20.21)

21 Mar

I divided the show into two parts this week, one part the traditional Turntable For One party for St. Patrick’s Day, replete with Irish singers and musicians, Irish-American singers and musicians, and the most important Turntable for One tradition of all: me eating a bowl of Lucky Charms on the air. To celebrate the fact that this was my first live show from the station in a long, long while, in the second part of the show I shared some of the music that helped get me through the last 12 months of sheltering in place.
