PLAYLIST FOR “UNIMPEACHABLE LOVE SONGS” (2.13.21)

14 Feb

After doing about a dozen Valentine’s Day shows over the years, I needed something new for this year’s theme. Out of the blue this theme came to me. I don’t know why I thought of it. The show was a mix of love songs, plus a few Valentine gifts to myself and a number of song dedications from the audience. In the end, I believe I acquitted myself well. And, acquittal is all the matters, right?

PLAYLIST FOR “TOWN & COUNTRY” (2.6.21)

7 Feb

Remember the story we were taught when we were little? It was the story of the country mouse, cautious and practical, and the city mouse, worldly and sophisticated. I know my teachers were trying to teach us to be like the common sense country mouse. And I was never able to convince them that the two mice would be indistinguishable when caught in a sticky trap. And so the debate about which is better – living in the country or living in the city – has gone on and on and on. And it went on during my show, too. Did I throw light on this debate or just throw shade? Did I answer the questions or question the answers? Really? You gotta be kidding. I just tried to fill two hours with songs about the city and songs about the country. Plus a shout-out to the Super Bowl cities. (I let Gloria Estefan represent Florida because I can’t think of a single song about FL or any of its cities I want to hear.)

PLAYLIST FOR “DESERT ISLAND GAME” (1.30.21)

1 Feb

It’s Winter. It’s cold. Snow is coming. A lot of it. And all the pandemic doctors and scientists are telling us it’s always dark just before it gets even darker! Who’s ready for a desert island? Put your hands down. I’m talking about me, not you. So I spent the show deciding which music or which versions to take to this desert island. I also spent time asking people to go to wmnr.org to become a member or make a pledge during the station’s Winter Fundraising Drive. I raised a good chunk of money and, I hope I raised hopes that some day soon we will be able to go to desert islands again. We can hope.

PLAYLIST FOR “MOOD” (1.23.21)

24 Jan

If i were posting on Instagram or Facebook, I could just post an appropriate photo with one single word, MOOD. That doesn’t work so well on radio, so instead I played songs that captured my mood this week as I watched everything that happened, everything that (thank God) didn’t happen, and indulged in the feeling of a new beginning and new hope. PLAYLIST FOR “A MUSICAL TRIBUTE TO DIRECT ADDRESS” (1.16.21)

17 Jan

“What we got here is failure to communicate,” said one of the most reprehensible yet prescient movie villains of all time. That line of dialogue has been playing frequently in my head these days. How can we communicate better? Of course, my answer to this and so many other questions is simple: better grammar. So in my continuing effort to leave no listener behind, I made a case for the vocative case, another term for the function of grammar known as direct address. All of the songs served as examples, using a name, a term of endearment, or a feeling to grab the attention of the intended object of communication. If only the rest of the world would function according to the orderly, predictable precepts in my dog-eared high school grammar book.

Looking back at the god-awful events of 2020 was entirely too upsetting, although looking back at how I reacted to those events with my musical themes may be almost as upsetting. I think we can do better in 2021. We have to.

PLAYLIST FOR “CONTRAFACTUM – AN ARCHIVE RE-BROADCAST” (12.26.20)

27 Dec

Out with the old? That’s what I did. I played an archive show from last June as the final program for this wretched year. Let’s hope for better – and I mean the new year, certainly not my shows. Here’s what I wrote in June:

Contrafactum – it’s not just a word on Jeopardy.  Contrafactum are two different songs with the same melody but different lyrics. To jazz musicians, they are two tunes with the same chordal structure. (I tossed a few of those in for good measure – excuse the pun.) Who said educational radio is dead? Probably somebody who has listened to my show.
