PLAYLIST FOR “ST. PATRICK’S DAY PARTY 2023” (3.18.23)

March 17th was National Sleep Day – the last holiday in the world I’d like my audience to celebrate. Fortunately, it was also St. Patrick’s Day. That’s more like it. So I presented a mixture of laughter and tears, a perfect combination for a St. Patrick’s Day celebration. Although, in truth, most of the tears were mine because once again I maintained my tradition of eating a celebratory bowl of Lucky Charms on the air. (Lucky Charms are now gluten-free. It didn’t help.)  Still, it was a grand night of Irish and Irish-American singers and a chance to celebrate the music of Jimmy McHugh.

PLAYLIST FOR “TESTING POSITIVE” (1.7.23)

All my life people have been telling me, You’re so negative? Why don’t you try to be more positive. Well, for the past month I have been positive – and I’ve been miserable!  Because I have been testing positive on one damned Covid test after another. Those tests have been the most depressing tests I’ve taken since the Myers-Briggs Personality test. But, finally, after a month, I was back, testing negative – and that’s good, right?  But that’s not the way things are supposed to be. Being Negative – that’s not good.  It’s bad. Being positive?  That’s good.  I’m very confused. So I brought a bunch of songs to see which ones Test Positive – in a good way ! -and it was good to be back at my Turntable For One.

It could have been worse.  Election Day Tuesday was supposed to be worse.  So bad I thought I might have to head for a desert island. I even packed a suitcase and told the radio station I was changing the name of the show to Palm Tree For One. But it didn’t turn out as catastrophically as I feared. They were superstars on their own, iconic names who didn’t need first names: Carreras, Domingo, Pavarotti. The world loved them; and they loved the world – sometimes a little too literary. When they agreed to sing together, they went from superstars to superheroes: The Three Tenors. Three? Really? That’s all it takes to be adored? I can do better – much better than that! I couldn’t make it to the station this week, but did that mean no St. Patrick’s Day party this year? Nope. I dug this show from 2019 out of the archives. This is what I wrote about the show back then:

 

 

It’s been a Turntable For One St. Patrick’s Day tradition for me to play some jazz singers from Ireland, a few Irish-American (or at least half-Irish-American) singers and musicians, and – always a highlight – for me to eat some traditional Irish food on the air – which, of course, means  a bowl of Lucky Charms. PLAYLIST FOR “ANNIVERSARY” (1.8.22)

 2022 is just a week old, but it’s been an eventful week. We observed the one-year anniversary of one of the most disgraceful, unforgettable, unforgivable moments in American history. On a happier note – there are happier notes. WMNR Fine Arts Radio celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2022.  On a personal note, my wife and I celebrated our 52nd anniversary this week. Did we go to a fabulous restaurant?  No, not when omicron is on most menus as a main course. Did we go ice skating? (Something Megan has loved her entire life.) Let me just say that the only things more brittle than my ego are my bones. So we went dancing instead?  Did you hear what I just said about my bones?  Actually, no, that one’s more about my ego.  Which finally brings me to this week’s theme if anyone is still awake. I wanted to celebrate my anniversary and my wife with some of the music that brought us together, some of the music Megan and I discovered together, some of the music that has sustained us. In short: just when you thought this show couldn’t get more self-indulgent, I presented two hours of Music We Love on this Happy Anniversary edition of Turntable For One. (Starting with the music that played when Megan walked down the aisle at our wedding.)

I divided the show into two parts this week, one part the traditional Turntable For One party for St. Patrick’s Day, replete with Irish singers and musicians, Irish-American singers and musicians, and the most important Turntable for One tradition of all: me eating a bowl of Lucky Charms on the air. To celebrate the fact that this was my first live show from the station in a long, long while, in the second part of the show I shared some of the music that helped get me through the last 12 months of sheltering in place. Well, that didn’t take very long, 2021. You went from an exhilarating high on Tuesday to an abysmal low on Wednesday. In utter disbelief of  events we all were watching, I looked for a modicum of solace, peace, and even hope from a familiar source: comfort food – ice cream, mashed potatoes, peanut butter on matzoh.
