PLAYLIST FOR “IN THE PRESENT PERFECT – A MUSICAL TRIBUTE” (9.19.20)

20 Sep

Who wants to take a quiz? Of course you do! It’s a grammar quiz – and of course you don’t. Too bad; here it is: Present Perfect. I know – there’s nothing perfect about the present. I meant Present Perfect Tense. I know – could things get any more tense? You’re still not with me. The Present Perfect Tense describes something that began in the past and is still happening – like this interminable introduction. Present Perfect tense is formed by the word have or has followed by the past participle of a verb. For instance this introduction has shaken my trust in humanity. Which is a bit extreme, don’t you think? A better example would be all of the song titles in my playlist. Yes, it was another one of my self-indulgent and utterly futile attempts to Make Grammar Great Again (MGGA!) with a Musical Tribute to the Present Perfect Tense.

PLAYLIST FOR “REQUEST WEEK” – TURNTABLE FOR ONE SEASON 11 PREMIERE (9.5.20)

6 Sep

I kicked off my 11th season by kicking back and letting the audience do most of the work. Every song (until the last) was a request from someone out there in radioland. About half-way through the show, I started to fret that their choices were so good, maybe they don’t need me at all. Lesson: Always watch out for unintended consequences.

PLAYLIST FOR “A TURNTABLE FOR ONE FOURTH OF JULY CELEBRATION!” (7.4.20)

5 Jul

This was my first Fourth Of July show ever (I’m usually off during July and August). So should the show be patriotic? Ironic? Serious? Cynical? Yes, yes, yes, and yes! I celebrated with some traditional songs, plus the Buddy Rich Big Band for fireworks, Laverne Butler with a declaration of independence, tributes to Freddy Cole, Johnny Mandel, and Jim Pepper, and  songs by Dave Frishberg, Randy Newman in celebration of the First Amendment. Looks like I’ll be around all summer this year. Check back frequently.

PLAYLIST FOR “TAKING AN EGO TRIP” – AN ARCHIVE RE-BROADCAST – (12.14.19)

16 Dec

I couldn’t get to the studio this week. It turns out that GPS is useless when you’re taking an ego trip. So I went deep into the archives for a show that, sadly, is as relevant today as it was a few years ago. Maybe more. Of course, I added a few cautionary tales to the Ego Trip itinerary, and a few of these trips don’t exactly come in for a soft landing.

PLAYLIST FOR “A MUSICAL TRIBUTE TO CLIMATE CHANGE” (10.19.19)

20 Oct

The earth is heating up, ice caps and glaciers are melting, the seas are rising, and many species, including our own, are threatened with extinction. What are we going to do? Well, I did what I always do: I exploited these serious problems, trivializing them with two hours of catchy, swinging, and often ironic songs. Some of them were comments on current conditions; others were things we need to curtail to save the planet. The first song was an answer to “What’s going to be the new capital city of the East Coast?” The second song was written in 1921 but casts an eerie darkness to what’s going on today. Just to be a pro-active citizen, I recycled and re-used a previous mystery vocalist. And as for the last two songs: which one will future generations be singing? That’s up to us now.
