I celebrated National Piano Month, playing some of my favorite pianists, singer/pianists, and songwriters.  However, I did have to take a moment to talk to a small portion of my audience – thr pets that listen because their people listen.  Pets had a scary week with all the talk about bad people kidnapping and eating them  I wanted to reassure them with some special songs to say that we love them and they are  safe.

PLAYLIST FOR “HALLOWEEN PARTY 2023” 10.28.23

30 Oct

It’s that time again. Time for ghost and goblins and ghouls; time for witches, curses, and the walking dead. And that means it’s time for my annual musical tribute to Congress. Whoops – wrong calendar! I mean it’s time for my annual Halloween Party. I play my favorite Halloween songs, and when trick or treaters come to the door, I get to guess who they’re dressed up to be, and then hand out an appropriate song. The final song of the show has absolutely nothing to do with Halloween, but I think it has absolutely everything to do with everything else.

PLAYLIST FOR “ST. PATRICK’S DAY PARTY 2023” (3.18.23)

19 Mar

March 17th was National Sleep Day – the last holiday in the world I’d like my audience to celebrate. Fortunately, it was also St. Patrick’s Day. That’s more like it. So I presented a mixture of laughter and tears, a perfect combination for a St. Patrick’s Day celebration. Although, in truth, most of the tears were mine because once again I maintained my tradition of eating a celebratory bowl of Lucky Charms on the air. (Lucky Charms are now gluten-free. It didn’t help.)  Still, it was a grand night of Irish and Irish-American singers and a chance to celebrate the music of Jimmy McHugh.

PLAYLIST FOR “IT’S THAT TIME!” (11.6.21)

8 Nov

Something unusual and special happened this weekend. No, my show wasn’t organized and coherent. I said, unusual and special, I didn’t say anything about a miracle. If you’ve been examining or reexamining your life, you’ve probably thought. “Wouldn’t it be great if I could turn back the clock?” Well, this was  your night! The end of Daylight Saving Time.  Time to Fall behind and turn the clocks back an hour. So as what I’m calling a public service, I offered some reminders about turning back the clocks and a few suggestions for what to do with that extra hour. So what I’m calling a good time was had by all.

PLAYLIST FOR “MIXED MESSAGES” (5.29.21)

31 May

Webster may be the champion of spellers and Fowler the God of Grammar, but my mother was the unchallenged monarch of the mixed message, offering such gems as “Is that a new haircut? Maybe your friends won’t notice.” “That’s a funny joke. Do you think anyone will get it?” “A new job? Wonderful. I hope it’s not too much for you.” (I could go on and on and on – but I think you get the idea.) So this week I gave my audience a masterclass in Mixed Messages, passing along some of Mom’s favorite techniques and strategies with the help of some mixed message song combinations by some unequivocally great singers.

PLAYLIST FOR “VIOLENCE WEEK” – A SHOW FROM THE ARCHIVES (2.27.21)

1 Mar

I spent the week wandering through the Turntable For One archives and found this show from Nov. 2019. It certainly made me nostalgic for doing a live show. Sigh… This is how I introduced the playlist back then:

If you ask me – and I’m going to pretend that you have – nothing stirs the heart and lifts our spirits like the men and women who, through practice and persistence, have mastered the art of violence — hey, wait a minute. That’s not what I’m typing! How do I turn off auto-fill? I mean VIOLINS! All of the music this week features a violin or a string section, or a jazz or classical violinist, plus a couple singers who also play violin. All in all, it was a very satisfying auditory discussion of string theory.

PLAYLIST FOR “MAKING TURNTABLE FOR ONE MORE COLORFUL” (8.15.20)

16 Aug

I get lots of requests from listeners, most of which I can’t fulfill because I sold my dueling pistols many years ago. When someone suggested that I try to make the program more colorful, immediately after my legal team informed me that I couldn’t sue for slander, I decided to give it a go. Below is my colorful solution – songs and/or singers or musicians with colorful names. (I know that Billie Holiday isn’t a color. But you know who took the solo on that cut? Urbie Green!)
