PLAYLIST FOR “KICKING IT ‘OLD’ SCHOOL” (2.9.19)

10 Feb

I don’t get it why people are so negative about the word, old. Some of our greatest songwriters have used that word in some of their greatest songs. And some of our youngest singers are giving new voice to these old songs. I say, this grievous mistake must be corrected. (Or am I just up to my old tricks, trying to fill two hours with music? You be the judge…)

PLAYLIST FOR “GROUNDHOG DAY!” (2.2.19)

2 Feb

Explain to me again why we created a holiday to honor an ugly, destructive rodent and a misguided superstition while continuing to discredit the value of scientific facts in our lives? PLAYLIST FOR ” A MUSICAL TRIBUTE TO THE GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN” (1.12.19)

13 Jan

Turntable For One is all about problems – certainly not solving them, more like creating them, exacerbating them, and at the very least exploiting them. So this week I tackled the problem of the government shutdown. What did I do? I played music, of course, but I also dedicated the program to the 800,000 federal employees who have gone from figuring out how to live paycheck to paycheck to how to live no paycheck to no paycheck. The President said he didn’t want to call this a shutdown. I agree. How about travesty?

PLAYLIST FOR “WINNERS AND LOSERS” (11.3.18)

29 Dec

Soon it will all be in the rearview mirror; the midterms will have passed, and we’ll know who are the winners and who are the losers. It will all be over – except for the celebrating, the crying, the blaming, the lawsuits, the recounts, the excuses, the recriminations, the marches, the protests. This is a special show I wait for every year. In addition to presenting some of the music I’ve been thankful for during the past year, I ask some of my fellow broadcasters to record a brief intro for their choices, because it’s also “Family Night At Turntable For One,” so my wife and son offer their choices, plus I ask a few of my favorite singers to tell my audience about a song or singer they’re thankful for. Saturday afternoon, I sat in for Garrett Stack on his program American Jukebox, rock and pop hits of the ’50s, ’60s, and ’70s.  So I thought I’d spend Saturday evening on my show playing jazz versions of pop tunes.
