PLAYLIST FOR “ELLA FITZGERALD CHALLENGES THE WORLD!” (9.24.16)

26 Sep

This week Ella Fitzgerald took on all comers in a head-to-head, well, really a voice-to-voice competition. She sang standards and some surprising duets; she even challenged Sarah Vaughan in a “forgetting the lyrics” competition (Sarah won) and challenged Shirley Horn to a “slow singing” competition (Shirley won). But it was impossible to listen to this show without marveling at Ella’s musicality and her warmth and without feeling fortunate that we had her for so long.

SOUNDS LIKE A PLAN

What’s the difference between a Dream and a Plan? Well, I’ve been having a lot of bad dreams lately, a lot of bad plans, too. Dreams aren’t real and they don’t come true…of course, most of my plans don’t come true, either. You know, maybe there’s no difference at all. Both of them end in disappointment and heartache – but not when singers like the ones I played are singing about plans they’re making!

PLAYLIST FOR “DEMENTIA REDUX” AND “IT’S ABOUT TIME” (3.12.16) #jazz #jazzradio #jazzsingers

13 Mar

Everything was clicking along with great songs, great singers, and a very current and topical theme – Dementia – when I seemed to remember suddenly (and conveniently) that I had done this very same theme three weeks ago. I thought it was the perfect example of “form is content.” I also thought someone in the audience might call me out on this “mistake,” but I guess either the audience is just too kind and considerate to criticize me or dementia is more of a problem than I thought. So I quickly switched gears and since it was Daylight Saving Time “Spring Ahead” night, I played an hour of songs about Time

PLAYLIST FOR “TWO SHOWS FROM THE ARCHIVE” (2.27.16) #jazz #jazzradio #jazzsingers

27 Feb

I played two shows from the archive while I took a Saturday off to gather my thoughts. I should have brought a leaf rake. First up was “All Talk Radio!” a show from last fall after an exciting two weeks at Pundit Training Camp where I learned the valuable lessons all pundits and news commentators know, such as: it’s not what you have to say, but how long it takes you to say it. Oh, I could have talked on and on and on and on about this, but I filled up most of the hour with some great songs about talking.

SONG TITLE  /  Artist  /  CD Or Album Title

  • I DON’T WANT TO HEAR IT ANYMORE  /  Mark Jennett  /  “The Way I Am”
  • WORDS  /  The Real Group  /  “Live In Japan”

The second show, “The Complaint Department,” first aired 3 years ago. The only complaint I want to hear after the show is from your neighbors because you were playing the music too loud.

SONG TITLE  /  Artist  /  CD or Album Title

  • BUT NOT FOR ME  /  Gladys Knight  /  “Before Me”
  • HOW COULD YOU DO A THING LIKE THAT  /  Frank Sinatra  /  “Come Swing With Me”

In last Wednesday’s hint, I asked what was the only thing I haven’t been called during the 5 1/2 year run of Turntable For One. Thanks for all of the suggestions (most of which were unprintable). Of course, calling me these things immediately disqualifies your answer from the quiz. The answer I was thinking of was “all heart.” And as you peruse the playlist, I think you’ll see that I’ve rectified that situation. PLAYLIST FOR “BREAKING NEWS” (4.11.15) #jazz #jazzradio #jazzvocalists #prx

13 Apr

Every story on the cable news channels is presented as BREAKING NEWS! The hype and hyperbole were driving me crazy…until I remembered why they’re doing it – to keep the audience interested, tuned in, and awake. Hey, that’s exactly what I want, too. So I presented every song this week as a BREAKING NEWS story, everything from breaking news about Justin Bieber (“I Won’t Grow Up”) to a home invasion (“The Three Bears”) to a new statement from Edward Snowden to America (“You’d Be So Nice To Come Home to”) to the discovery of the Fountain Of Youth (“Young At Heart”). Maybe I didn’t get all the stories right, but isn’t that the hallmark of BREAKING NEWS: get it fast, not right?

PLAYLIST FOR “DESERT ISLAND GAME-2015” (3.7.15)

7 Mar

We’ve played The Desert Island game before when I’ve asked listeners to choose songs or singers to take with them to a desert island. Of course I laughed at their pain and deliberations and difficulty in choosing to take one thing and leave behind another equally good choice — but not this week because it was my turn to play the game. Suddenly the Sondheim lyrics, “the choice may have been mistaken, but choosing was not” didn’t sound as easy or certain.
