PLAYLIST FOR “PLAYING NICE” 11.15.25

16 Nov

It started when we were kids, I mean little kids. Our teachers would tell us. Our parents would tell us. Our aunts and uncles, cousins, and sometime even the mail carrier would tell us: Play Nice! (Of course my parents also told me not to lock my little sister in the trunk of our Chevy Impala – but that’s for another show). Playing Nice – it’s a phrase, an admonition, and a concept that’s kind of gone out of fashion these days.  But not while I have this microphone, because for two hours, I just played nice – nice songs by singers and musicians who know how to play nice.

PLAYLIST FOR “TURN UP THE QUIET” 5.4.24

5 May

Here are a few recent fan emails.

Dear Turntable For One. Will you keep it down? I’m trying to sleep. (That guy is a regular.)

Dear Turntable For One – Help. I forget how to turn off my radio. Signed, Desperate on Saturday Night.  (I wasn’t able to help her.)

Dear H. William Stine. I keep asking Alexa to play quietly and she keeps saying she doesn’t know that one.

Sense a pattern here? I did. If it’s quiet they want, it’s quiet they got this week.

PLAYLIST FOR “MANNERS MATTER” 11.18.23

19 Nov

What on earth is going on?  Punching in the house of representatives.  Senators challenging witnesses to fight.  Road rage.  Parking lot rage; grocery store rage. What’s next? Library rage?  People: What are you thinking?  What do you need?  Maybe lessons in good manners?  Okay.  We can do that – because this week on Turntable For One, Manners Matter.  Good manners teach us how to dress, what to say (and not say), how to be courteous and kind. PLAYLIST FOR “NIGHT TIME IS THE RIGHT TIME” 11.11.23

14 Nov

I’ve been having trouble adjusting to Daylight Savings Time going away. They said we’d gain an hour. We did. We gained an extra hour of darkness. My body doesn’t know when to wake up or when to fall asleep – although falling asleep is something I never discuss in front of my audience. PLAYLIST FOR “ANNIVERSARY” (1.8.22)

9 Jan

2022 is just a week old, but it’s been an eventful week. We observed the one-year anniversary of one of the most disgraceful, unforgettable, unforgivable moments in American history. On a happier note – there are happier notes. WMNR Fine Arts Radio celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2022.  On a personal note, my wife and I celebrated our 52nd anniversary this week. Did we go to a fabulous restaurant?  No, not when omicron is on most menus as a main course. Did we go ice skating? (Something Megan has loved her entire life.) Let me just say that the only things more brittle than my ego are my bones. So we went dancing instead?  Did you hear what I just said about my bones?  Actually, no, that one’s more about my ego.  Which finally brings me to this week’s theme if anyone is still awake. I wanted to celebrate my anniversary and my wife with some of the music that brought us together, some of the music Megan and I discovered together, some of the music that has sustained us. In short: just when you thought this show couldn’t get more self-indulgent, I presented two hours of Music We Love on this Happy Anniversary edition of Turntable For One. (Starting with the music that played when Megan walked down the aisle at our wedding.)

PLAYLIST FOR “REDUX” (3.20.21)

21 Mar

I divided the show into two parts this week, one part the traditional Turntable For One party for St. Patrick’s Day, replete with Irish singers and musicians, Irish-American singers and musicians, and the most important Turntable for One tradition of all: me eating a bowl of Lucky Charms on the air. To celebrate the fact that this was my first live show from the station in a long, long while, in the second part of the show I shared some of the music that helped get me through the last 12 months of sheltering in place. So nice to be back, like Spring flowers, green grass, and seasonal allergies.

PLAYLIST FOR “VIOLENCE WEEK” – A SHOW FROM THE ARCHIVES (2.27.21)

1 Mar

I spent the week wandering through the Turntable For One archives and found this show from Nov. 2019. It certainly made me nostalgic for doing a live show. Sigh… This is how I introduced the playlist back then:

If you ask me – and I’m going to pretend that you have – nothing stirs the heart and lifts our spirits like the men and women who, through practice and persistence, have mastered the art of violence — hey, wait a minute. That’s not what I’m typing! How do I turn off auto-fill? I mean VIOLINS! All of the music this week features a violin or a string section, or a jazz or classical violinist, plus a couple singers who also play violin. All in all, it was a very satisfying auditory discussion of string theory.

PLAYLIST FOR “11TH ANNUAL MUSIC TO BE THANKFUL FOR” (11.28.20)

29 Nov

Definitely one of my favorite shows every year because it gives me a chance to highlight music I’m thankful for and invite other WMNR broadcasters (B) and some of my favorite singers (S) to talk about and introduce music that’s important to them. Plus, because this show always falls near my birthday, it’s also “family night” at Turntable For One. So my wife and son join me at the radio station to offer their banter and musical selections. This year was different. My wife, Megan, was in the studio with me; our son, Cody, whom we saw at Thanksgiving via FaceTime (just like so many families this year), reported in from the safety of his NYC apartment. Stay well. Stay safe. Everyone.
