PLAYLIST FOR “A MUSICAL TRIBUTE TO CLIMATE CHANGE” (10.19.19)

The earth is heating up, ice caps and glaciers are melting, the seas are rising, and many species, including our own, are threatened with extinction. What are we going to do? Well, I did what I always do: I exploited these serious problems, trivializing them with two hours of catchy, swinging, and often ironic songs. Some of them were comments on current conditions; others were things we need to curtail to save the planet. The first song was an answer to “What’s going to be the new capital city of the East Coast?” The second song was written in 1921 but casts an eerie darkness to what’s going on today. Just to be a pro-active citizen, I recycled and re-used a previous mystery vocalist. And as for the last two songs: which one will future generations be singing? That’s up to us now.

The Oscars, the Tonys, the Golden Globes, the Emmys, the Grammys – everybody loves award shows with all the attendant and attendees’ glitz and glamour. Shouldn’t I get a piece of this? Probably not, but when have I ever let good decisions or good taste interfere with my plans? PLAYLIST FOR ” A MUSICAL TRIBUTE TO THE GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN” (1.12.19)

Turntable For One is all about problems – certainly not solving them, more like creating them, exacerbating them, and at the very least exploiting them. So this week I tackled the problem of the government shutdown. What did I do? I played music, of course, but I also dedicated the program to the 800,000 federal employees who have gone from figuring out how to live paycheck to paycheck to how to live no paycheck to no paycheck. The President said he didn’t want to call this a shutdown. I agree. How about travesty?

Saturday afternoon, I sat in for Garrett Stack on his program American Jukebox, rock and pop hits of the ’50s, ’60s, and ’70s. Well, I’m finally back from being under the weather…I guess that means that now I’m over the weather. Last Saturday night, I let the audience play producer in the privacy of their own homes. Last Saturday, a trip down memory lane with an archive show from last February. I’ll be back in this studio this week!

It’s true that smiling requires more muscles than frowning, which must be why smiling always tires me so quickly. Still, considering all that we know and fear about the world today, I thought it was worth spending a couple hours focusing on laughing and smiling.
