PLAYLIST FOR “ALL BLUES” 10.11.25

12 Oct

About 5 years ago, I did a show called, “I Ain’t Got Nothin’ But The Blues.”  Back then, the country – and the  world – were reeling under a pandemic. Americans were confused, fearful, and angry, emotions reflected in contentious politics. We didn’t  know which way the country was going to go. As they say: the more things change… So what kind of mood do you think I’m still in five years later?

It’s been quite a peripatetic week, no? PLAYLIST FOR “WILLPOWER VS WON’T-POWER” (6.5.21)

6 Jun

What does it take to lose weight? Willpower. Stop biting your nails? Willpower. What does it take to stop watching America’s Got Talent? Half a brain – but that’s a different issue. Getting back on topic: what does it take to give up smoking? Again, Willpower. So let me get this straight: Willpower is forcing yourself not to do something. Wouldn’t it make more sense to call it Won’t-power?  But no – everyone gives Willpower all the praise and approbation. Well, not  this week! I think Won’t is just as important to songwriters as Will – maybe more important. I tried to prove that with songs about Will and Won’t. I won’t tell you which side won; but I will tell you the music definitely won.

PLAYLIST FOR “HOW SWEET IT IS” – AN ARCHIVE RE-BROADCAST (10.24.20)

25 Oct

Seems to me the world needs some sweetness even more than when I first did this show last June. Guaranteed “sweet” songs with no sugary aftertaste. Here’s how I introduced the show last summer.

Sweet – it’s a word that you don’t hear much, especially now. Home Sweet Home? After three months of sheltering in place, what’s so sweet about being home? Sweet Dreams? Its been months since I had one. Sweet Spot? I know what it used to mean, but now it means keeping six feet away from people. Sweet Nothings? That’s still how most people describe the long, rambling opens to my shows (just like this). So I thought it was time to give Sweet a little love. It was only for two hours – then everyone could go back to life as we know it these days.

PLAYLIST FOR “I GOT TWO WORDS FOR YOU” (9.7.19)

9 Sep

You know what drives me crazy? People who over-use already tired rhetorical cliches, such as “With all due respect” – which is always a lie. My least favorite: “I got two words for you…” I thought (hoped) if I used that phrase over and over and over for two hours and if every song I played had a two-word title, maybe – just maybe – people would think twice (or maybe even once) and not use that annoying expression. Did it work? I got three words for myself: “In your dreams.”

PLAYLIST FOR “THE T.F.O. AWARDS” (3.2.19)

2 Mar

The Oscars, the Tonys, the Golden Globes, the Emmys, the Grammys – everybody loves award shows with all the attendant and attendees’ glitz and glamour. Shouldn’t I get a piece of this? Probably not, but when have I ever let good decisions or good taste interfere with my plans? So this week I made up arbitrary categories and presented awards to performers who, unlike myself, have made a positive difference to my show. Introducing the “T.F.O.
