Saturday afternoon, I guest-hosted American Jukebox, rock hits of the 50s, 60s, and 70s and played music to celebrate International Dance Day and pop stars who have also sung from the Great American Songbook. They were superstars on their own, iconic names who didn’t need first names: Carreras, Domingo, Pavarotti. The world loved them; and they loved the world – sometimes a little too literary. When they agreed to sing together, they went from superstars to superheroes: The Three Tenors. Three? Really? That’s all it takes to be adored? I can do better – much better than that! Let the adoration flow because I presented More Than Three Tenors” this week. Of course, I meant, tenor sax players and accompanists plus a few favorite tenor voices as well.

Taking baby steps – isn’t that what I was doing in my driveway after the last snow storm? Out of the mouths of babes – isn’t that why we put bibs on them? Sleep like a baby – I’m sure my audience can relate to that. Throw the baby out with the bath water – doesn’t that just mean it’s time to get your eyes examined? In the beginning was the Word. Okay, fine. But not this week. Not on this show. Almost everything I played started out as an instrumental and the lyrics came later. To bring things back to reality, I ended with a melody played so beautifully that I don’t think it really needed the lyrics added later and, finally, with a lyric that Johnny Mercer wrote but didn’t live long enough to set to music.

Something unusual and special happened this weekend. No, my show wasn’t organized and coherent. I said, unusual and special, I didn’t say anything about a miracle. If you’ve been examining or reexamining your life, you’ve probably thought. “Wouldn’t it be great if I could turn back the clock?” Well, this was  your night! The end of Daylight Saving Time.  Time to Fall behind and turn the clocks back an hour. Don’t you love it when Nat Cole sings one of his signature songs, for instance, Smile? Someone else sang that this week. What about any recordings of Sinatra singing Angel Eyes? PLAYLIST FOR “SEASON FINALE 2021” (7.3.21)

It was the last show of the season. I’m off for two months replaced by live concerts from the Tanglewood Music Festival. But I’ll be keeping busy, once again firing up my ice cream truck and coming to a neighborhood near you. Here are some of the ice cream treats I’ll be featuring this year. Oh, and I also played a lot of songs about saying goodbye.

  • Wait till you try a Pandemic parfait. I know. I served this last year but I have a new variant this year. I think it’s a real killer.
  • This year I’ll be offering the Marjorie Taylor Green Sundae. Heavy on the whipped cream, heavier on the nuts
  • Of course I’ll have that old favorite, Cookie dough for the kid in you and play dough for the actual kids. They’ll eat it anyway.
  • How about my newest flavor – I just invented it in Jan. It’s Insurrection Ice Cream. It’s two parts Pabst Blue Ribbon and one part viagra. WARNING: If you have an Insurrection that lasts more than 4 hours, better call your lawyer.
  • One of my new favorites is Arizona chocolate chip. There are exactly 723 chocolate chips in a pint – we know because someone from Arizona has re-counted them three times.
  • Want something that’s locally sourced, non-GMO, organic, and recyclable? Try a napkin from the dispenser. My ice cream is a totally different story.
  • This year’s special offer: when you buy ten q-anon cones you get a free Jewish space laser.
  • Remember: My staff is fully vaccinated, they don’t wear masks, they don’t wear gloves, and they don’t wear hairnets – maybe I shouldn’t have told you that last one

Webster may be the champion of spellers and Fowler the God of Grammar, but my mother was the unchallenged monarch of the mixed message, offering such gems as “Is that a new haircut? Maybe your friends won’t notice.” “That’s a funny joke. Do you think anyone will get it?” “A new job? Wonderful.
