I couldn’t get to the studio this week. It turns out that GPS is useless when you’re taking an ego trip. So I went deep into the archives for a show that, sadly, is as relevant today as it was a few years ago. Maybe more. I’m sure I’ve mentioned a few dozen times that I’m a “glass half-empty” kind of guy. Not only do I think the glass is half-empty, I worry about who’s been drinking from my glass. I can find something sad about an IRS refund. And don’t get me started about “brown paper packages tied up with strings.” Don’t you think that’s setting the bar for happiness a little low? So, of course,  when I do a show about Laughter, I’m also going to do a show about Tears. It makes perfect sense to me – and, after all, it’s my show.

Generally it takes 12 muscles to smile and 11 muscles to frown. But the 25 songs I played don’t even begin to capture the complexity, the intensity, the subtleties,  and the diversity of bitterness. If I left out your favorite, don’t be bitter. I only have two hours. But, at least I did prove that even Canadians can be bitter.

The Oscars, the Tonys, the Golden Globes, the Emmys, the Grammys – everybody loves award shows with all the attendant and attendees’ glitz and glamour. Shouldn’t I get a piece of this? Probably not, but when have I ever let good decisions or good taste interfere with my plans? So this week I made up arbitrary categories and presented awards to performers who, unlike myself, have made a positive difference to my show. Introducing the “T.F.O. I don’t get it why people are so negative about the word, old. Some of our greatest songwriters have used that word in some of their greatest songs. And some of our youngest singers are giving new voice to these old songs. I say, this grievous mistake must be corrected. (Or am I just up to my old tricks, trying to fill two hours with music?
