It’s that time again, time when ghastly, ghostly white apparitions appear. The living dead, their eyes open but unseeing, their mouths moving but they say nothing. I know, I just described the U.S. Senate, but that’s not what the show was about this week. I served up a bobbing bucket full of great ghoulish songs at the annual Turntable for One Halloween party! And, best of all, I got to play my favorite game. When Trick Or Treaters came to the door, I got to guess who they were dressed up to be and give them an appropriate song. (Professional tip: This also saves a ton of money on candy.)

We may try to hide them with varying degrees of success or failure because – let’s face it – they totally reveal us, they embarrass us, and the worst ones can  actually define us for the rest of our lives. Don’t you love it when Nat Cole sings one of his signature songs, for instance, Smile? Someone else sang that this week. What about any recordings of Sinatra singing Angel Eyes? This was the week of WMNR’s Fall Fundraising Drive and many of the broadcasters and staff took to the airwaves to ask, cajole, exhort, plead, beg for listeners to call in to make a pledge. I tried to be a little more laid back, subtle, and subliminal, playing songs with telephone in the title or lyrics. PLAYLIST FOR “SEASON FINALE 2021” (7.3.21)

It was the last show of the season. I’m off for two months replaced by live concerts from the Tanglewood Music Festival. But I’ll be keeping busy, once again firing up my ice cream truck and coming to a neighborhood near you. Here are some of the ice cream treats I’ll be featuring this year. Oh, and I also played a lot of songs about saying goodbye.

  • Wait till you try a Pandemic parfait. I know. I served this last year but I have a new variant this year. I think it’s a real killer.
  • This year I’ll be offering the Marjorie Taylor Green Sundae. Heavy on the whipped cream, heavier on the nuts
  • Of course I’ll have that old favorite, Cookie dough for the kid in you and play dough for the actual kids. They’ll eat it anyway.
  • How about my newest flavor – I just invented it in Jan. It’s Insurrection Ice Cream. It’s two parts Pabst Blue Ribbon and one part viagra. WARNING: If you have an Insurrection that lasts more than 4 hours, better call your lawyer.
  • One of my new favorites is Arizona chocolate chip. There are exactly 723 chocolate chips in a pint – we know because someone from Arizona has re-counted them three times.
  • Want something that’s locally sourced, non-GMO, organic, and recyclable? Try a napkin from the dispenser. My ice cream is a totally different story.
  • This year’s special offer: when you buy ten q-anon cones you get a free Jewish space laser.
  • Remember: My staff is fully vaccinated, they don’t wear masks, they don’t wear gloves, and they don’t wear hairnets – maybe I shouldn’t have told you that last one

I spent the week wandering through the Turntable For One archives and found this show from Nov. 2019. It certainly made me nostalgic for doing a live show. Sigh… This is how I introduced the playlist back then:

If you ask me – and I’m going to pretend that you have – nothing stirs the heart and lifts our spirits like the men and women who, through practice and persistence, have mastered the art of violence — hey, wait a minute. That’s not what I’m typing! How do I turn off auto-fill? I did a live show this week if only to see if I remembered how to turn on the mic (though I’m sure there were those in the audience hoping I’d forgotten how). But my annual Halloween party is one of my favorite shows of the year because Trick or Treaters always come to the door and I get to guess their costumes and then pass out an appropriate song instead of candy. I ended the show with a reminder about setting their clocks back an hour Saturday night (hoping we don’t turn the clocks back a couple decades on Tuesday).

PLAYLIST FOR “MEMORY PROBLEMS” (9.29.20)

In the past I’ve done shows on “whistling” and “dancing.” Why did I choose those themes? Because those are two things I’ve never been able to do. In my life! I also can’t roll my tongue but, come on – if you can get two hours of songs out of that theme, you should be doing my show. In picking themes, I gotta go with what I know. So Memory Problems, songs about remembering and forgetting, was an obvious choice. I finished the show with a poem/prayer sung in Hebrew by Sophie Milman. I couldn’t let RBG’s passing go without some kind of celebration.
