PLAYLIST FOR “ALL TALK ALL THE TIME” (11.23.19)

24 Nov

We’ve been hearing a lot of talk lately – opening statements, closing statements, testimony, rebuttals, colloquies, points of order (even when there didn’t seem to be any point nor any discernible order). So in the best and, I might add, the most predictable Turntable For One tradition, I tried to exploit and exacerbate the situation with lots of songs about talking, telling, saying, and opining. And everyone had a good time…at least that’s what I’m telling myself.

PLAYLIST FOR “VIOLENCE WEEK” (11.9.19)

11 Nov

If you ask me – and I’m going to pretend that you have – nothing stirs the heart and lifts our spirits like the men and women who, through practice and persistence, have mastered the art of violence — hey, wait a minute. That’s not what I’m typing! How do I turn off auto-fill? I mean VIOLINS! All of the music this week features a violin or a string section, or a jazz or classical violinist, plus a couple singers who also play violin. All in all, it was a very satisfying auditory discussion of string theory.

PLAYLIST FOR “A MUSICAL TRIBUTE TO CLIMATE CHANGE” (10.19.19)

20 Oct

The earth is heating up, ice caps and glaciers are melting, the seas are rising, and many species, including our own, are threatened with extinction. What are we going to do? Well, I did what I always do: I exploited these serious problems, trivializing them with two hours of catchy, swinging, and often ironic songs. Some of them were comments on current conditions; others were things we need to curtail to save the planet. The first song was an answer to “What’s going to be the new capital city of the East Coast?” The second song was written in 1921 but casts an eerie darkness to what’s going on today. Just to be a pro-active citizen, I recycled and re-used a previous mystery vocalist. And as for the last two songs: which one will future generations be singing? That’s up to us now.

PLAYLIST FOR “I GOT TWO WORDS FOR YOU” (9.7.19)

9 Sep

You know what drives me crazy? People who over-use already tired rhetorical cliches, such as “With all due respect” – which is always a lie. My least favorite: “I got two words for you…” I thought (hoped) if I used that phrase over and over and over for two hours and if every song I played had a two-word title, maybe – just maybe – people would think twice (or maybe even once) and not use that annoying expression. Did it work? I got three words for myself: “In your dreams.”

PLAYLIST FOR “EGO TRIP TRAVEL TIPS” – AN ARCHIVE RE-BROADCAST – (6.15.19)

16 Jun

I couldn’t get to the studio this week. It turns out that GPS is useless when you’re taking an ego trip. So I went deep into the archives for a show that, sadly, is as relevant today as it was a few years ago. Maybe more. PLAYLIST FOR “LOOK WHAT I FOUND IN THE MAILBOX!” (5.25.19)

27 May

Instead of a theme, instead of featuring the oft-heard Turntable For One regulars – Sinatra, Tony, Carmen, Ella, Nina, etc. – I put Saturday’s show together with only some of the new music I received in the mail (both physical and virtual) in just the past two weeks. I generously didn’t go into the other things I find in my mail – things like memorial headstone catalogs and threatening letters from Social Security since they found out that I am neither social nor secure. Also: here’s a shout out to all of the singers and musicians listed below – young and old – and to their promoters; without them my audience and I would just have to stare at each other for two hours, and I think we know who would lose that staring contest.
