PLAYLIST FOR “THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS” (2.1.20)

3 Feb

I’ve tried for months to do this theme, but something horrible would happen – in a mall, or a night club, or, dear God, another school. So, of course, out of decency I deferred. Besides, after a tragedy, that time is always reserved for politicians to offer their “thoughts and prayers” in lieu of doing anything. I thought I was safe this week, maybe because it was the night before the Super Bowl, or the night before Groundhog Day, or maybe because America really needs a hug this week, I offered some songs about thoughts and prayers.

PLAYLIST FOR “10th ANNUAL MUSIC TO BE THANKFUL FOR” (11.30.19)

1 Dec

This is one of my favorite shows every year, a chance to highlight music I’m thankful for and invite other WMNR broadcasters (B) and some of my favorite singers to talk about and introduce music that’s important to them. Plus, because this show always falls near my birthday, it’s also “family night” at Turntable For One. So my wife and son join me at the radio station to offer their selections.

PLAYLIST FOR “KNOWN AND UNKNOWN” (9.28.19)

28 Sep

This week’s show was ripped from the headlines with only superficial wounds as a result. Day after day we find out there are things we do know and things we don’t know. Since I’ve demonstrated time after time that I have no shame about exploiting current situations, I dedicated the show to the known and the unknown. I know I got away with it, while it’s unknown to me how I did it.

It all started because I was sick and tired of hearing words like mischaracterization, and collusion, and all the words that rhyme with it – contusion, infusion, diffusion, transfusion, confusion, etc. Enough! PLAYLIST FOR “I’M IN THE MOOD FOR THE SUBJUNCTIVE” (3.30.19)

30 Mar

In an effort to save an endangered and near extinct treasure – good grammar, I renewed my effort to MGGA – Make Grammar Great Again – and offered a remedial lesson in the subjunctive, that form of grammar that expresses wishes and desires for things we don’t have. Of course, I had a lot of help from some wonderful adjunct songwriters and singers. Wish you’d never heard of the subjunctive mood? Hey, maybe you understand this stuff better than you think.

Generally it takes 12 muscles to smile and 11 muscles to frown. But the 25 songs I played don’t even begin to capture the complexity, the intensity, the subtleties,  and the diversity of bitterness. PLAYLIST FOR “ST. PATRICK’S DAY PARTY 2019”

16 Mar

It’s been a Turntable For One St. Patrick’s Day tradition for me to play some jazz singers from Ireland, a few Irish-American (or at least half-Irish-American) singers and musicians, and – always a highlight – for me to eat some traditional Irish food on the air – which, of course, means  a bowl of Lucky Charms. And, as if hearing me struggle and choke wasn’t incentive enough, I made this year’s party a celebration of the songs of Jimmy McHugh, the wonderful Irish-American composer.

PLAYLIST FOR “MARIE KONDO WEEK!” (2,23.19)

24 Feb

This week’s show was a tribute to the diva of decluttering, the dean of de-accession, the titan of tidying up – Marie Kondo. I played nothing but music that “sparks joy” for me and tossed in a few joyful requests from the audience. Plus, following Marie Kondo’s advice, I gathered all my musical themes, thanked several of them for their service, and summarily threw them away.
