I know it was wishful thinking on my part, but on Saturday’s show I celebrated finally hitting bottom. No, this wasn’t a tribute to Stormy Daniels, it was a realization that the way things are going, I may not live long enough to see us hit the actual bottom. This week Ella Fitzgerald took on all comers in a head-to-head, well, really a voice-to-voice competition. She sang standards and some surprising duets; she even challenged Sarah Vaughan in a “forgetting the lyrics” competition (Sarah won) and challenged Shirley Horn to a “slow singing” competition (Shirley won). But it was impossible to listen to this show without marveling at Ella’s musicality and her warmth and without feeling fortunate that we had her for so long.
