PLAYLISTS FOR “SPEED DATING” AND “NIGHT OF THE LIVING INSOMNIACS” (ARCHIVE SHOWS) (12.3.16)

5 Dec

Didn’t do a live show this week, but found a couple of gems hidden in the archives.

First – Musical Speed Dating,  or as I think of it: Match.com meets Musical Chairs! 30 singers in 60 minutes – you do the math.  No other radio program would attempt to do this,  probably for good reasons.

Second: Night Of The Living Insomnaics! Ok, let’s dispense with the jokes about how can I have insomnia when I’m always putting audiences to sleep. That makes me yawn, okay? But not because I’m tired. Still, pretty impressive how many great singers and songs have dealt with the subject.

PLAYLIST FOR “ELLA FITZGERALD CHALLENGES THE WORLD!” (9.24.16)

This week Ella Fitzgerald took on all comers in a head-to-head, well, really a voice-to-voice competition. She sang standards and some surprising duets; she even challenged Sarah Vaughan in a “forgetting the lyrics” competition (Sarah won) and challenged Shirley Horn to a “slow singing” competition (Shirley won). PLAYLIST FOR “DEMENTIA REDUX” AND “IT’S ABOUT TIME” (3.12.16) #jazz #jazzradio #jazzsingers

13 Mar

Everything was clicking along with great songs, great singers, and a very current and topical theme – Dementia – when I seemed to remember suddenly (and conveniently) that I had done this very same theme three weeks ago. I thought it was the perfect example of “form is content.” I also thought someone in the audience might call me out on this “mistake,” but I guess either the audience is just too kind and considerate to criticize me or dementia is more of a problem than I thought. So I quickly switched gears and since it was Daylight Saving Time “Spring Ahead” night, I played an hour of songs about Time

I thought we could all use a two-hour break from the endless diarrhetic diatribes of easy answers and dichotomous thinking. Not all questions can be answered in a beat-the-buzzer 90-seconds. In fact, some of the swinging questions I played took more than five minutes just to ask.
