Most of these songs are losers, Oscar losers, that is.  (Though none of the singers and musicians are.) In addition to paying tribute to the Oscar nominated songs, I also took time out to pay tribute to Sweden and Swedish jazz singers in their time of tears and trial following the terrorist attacks that so surprised, if not stunned, us all when we heard about them.

It’s true that smiling requires more muscles than frowning, which must be why smiling always tires me so quickly. Still, considering all that we know and fear about the world today, I thought it was worth spending a couple hours focusing on laughing and smiling. PLAYLIST FOR “ELLA FITZGERALD CHALLENGES THE WORLD!” (9.24.16)

This week Ella Fitzgerald took on all comers in a head-to-head, well, really a voice-to-voice competition. She sang standards and some surprising duets; she even challenged Sarah Vaughan in a “forgetting the lyrics” competition (Sarah won) and challenged Shirley Horn to a “slow singing” competition (Shirley won). But it was impossible to listen to this show without marveling at Ella’s musicality and her warmth and without feeling fortunate that we had her for so long.
