I thought when you experience a Teachable Moment, you’re supposed to reflect and even have a change of heart. The only reflection I’m seeing these days is in my mirror – and I’m not too happy with those results either. This week, WMNR is holding its Winter Fundraising Drive and so in my usual subtle and surreptitious way, I offered songs with the subliminal theme of the cleansing benefits of giving your money away. I’m sure I’ve mentioned a few dozen times that I’m a “glass half-empty” kind of guy. Not only do I think the glass is half-empty, I worry about who’s been drinking from my glass. I can find something sad about an IRS refund. And don’t get me started about “brown paper packages tied up with strings.” Don’t you think that’s setting the bar for happiness a little low? So, of course,  when I do a show about Laughter, I’m also going to do a show about Tears. It makes perfect sense to me – and, after all, it’s my show.

PLAYLIST FOR “GIVE & TAKE WEEK” (10.12.19)

The two words, give and take, are frequently associated with my show, although usually in the form of “Give me a break!” and “I’m going to take a nap.” But this week all of the songs had either the words or the concepts of giving and taking. Plus it was the audience’s turn to get involved because it was Fall Fundraising week at WMNR, Fine Arts Radio (wmnr.org); so with phone and on-line pledges people put their money where my mouth is, supporting the show and this wonderful anomaly of a radio station. I’m have always been a “the-glass-is-half-empty” kind of guy. (I also worry who’s been drinking from that glass.) Why? Growing up, my family had a clear and distinct world view: “Something bad might happen.” So this week I challenged – no, I dared myself to look through the eyes of people who actually (and inexplicably) see the world positively. I played song after song about things possibly going right and how to make that happen. Happily I got through it but only by repeating my daily, personal affirmation: “What on earth were you thinking?”
