Webster may be the champion of spellers and Fowler the God of Grammar, but my mother was the unchallenged monarch of the mixed message, offering such gems as “Is that a new haircut? Maybe your friends won’t notice.” “That’s a funny joke. Do you think anyone will get it?” “A new job? Wonderful. I hope it’s not too much for you.” (I could go on and on and on – but I think you get the idea.) In addition to playing songs about Stop, Look, & Listen, I spent much of the hour asking anyone who would listen to stop and look into their wallets – I mean into their hearts and make a donation to the WMNR Spring Fundraising Drive. It wasn’t all pleading and begging. After I played Billie Holiday’s blown Take 7 of Glad To Be Unhappy, I  gave the audience the opportunity to make a couple of donations if they wanted to hear the completed version. A rewarding time was had by all – especially the radio station.

PLAYLIST FOR “TOWN & COUNTRY” (2.6.21)

Remember the story we were taught when we were little? It was the story of the country mouse, cautious and practical, and the city mouse, worldly and sophisticated. I know my teachers were trying to teach us to be like the common sense country mouse. And I was never able to convince them that the two mice would be indistinguishable when caught in a sticky trap. And so the debate about which is better – living in the country or living in the city – has gone on and on and on. And it went on during my show, too. Did I throw light on this debate or just throw shade? Did I answer the questions or question the answers? Really? You gotta be kidding. I just tried to fill two hours with songs about the city and songs about the country. Plus a shout-out to the Super Bowl cities. (I let Gloria Estefan represent Florida because I can’t think of a single song about FL or any of its cities I want to hear.)

PLAYLIST FOR “MUSICAL COMFORT FOOD” (1.9.21)

Well, that didn’t take very long, 2021. You went from an exhilarating high on Tuesday to an abysmal low on Wednesday. In utter disbelief of  events we all were watching, I looked for a modicum of solace, peace, and even hope from a familiar source: comfort food – ice cream, mashed potatoes, peanut butter on matzoh. And this week on the show, instead of an ironic theme, I decided just to share some of my go-to musical comfort food – songs and musicians I turn to when I need them most. And, boy, I really needed them this week.

Seems to me the world needs some sweetness even more than when I first did this show last June. Guaranteed “sweet” songs with no sugary aftertaste. Here’s how I introduced the show last summer. 

Sweet – it’s a word that you don’t hear much, especially now. Home Sweet Home? After three months of sheltering in place, what’s so sweet about being home? Sweet Dreams? Its been months since I had one. Sweet Spot? I know what it used to mean, but now it means keeping six feet away from people. Sweet Nothings? That’s still how most people describe the long, rambling opens to my shows (just like this). So I thought it was time to give Sweet a little love. It was only for two hours – then everyone could go back to life as we know it these days.
