PLAYLIST FOR “HALLOWEEN PARTY 2019” (10.26.19)

27 Oct

My Tenth Annual Halloween party with more treats than tricks. I got to play my favorite haunting melodies with  a number of them sung by some of my favorite ghosts. Of course, my favorite part every year is the game of being visited by trick or treaters and having to guess their costumes. Instead giving them candy, I hand out appropriate songs. A good time was had by all…okay, maybe only by me.

PLAYLIST FOR “KNOWN AND UNKNOWN” (9.28.19)

28 Sep

This week’s show was ripped from the headlines with only superficial wounds as a result. Day after day we find out there are things we do know and things we don’t know. Since I’ve demonstrated time after time that I have no shame about exploiting current situations, I dedicated the show to the known and the unknown. I know I got away with it, while it’s unknown to me how I did it.

PLAYLIST FOR “HAPPY 100th BIRTHDAY, NAT COLE!” (9.21.19)

21 Sep

Nat Cole would be 100 years old this year if he hadn’t died when he was 45. I suppose I should say something about how his music has lived on or how his legacy has lived on or how he has influenced so many singers and pianists. But, really, I just wanted to play some music I wanted to hear. In other words, it was business as usual at Turntable For One. But I was surprised to find so many tribute albums and pleased to include some from singers in Sweden, Belgium, and Mexico. Also gave a 100th birthday shout-out to George Shearing. PLAYLIST FOR: “OPEN BORDERS” (4.6.19)

7 Apr

I opened the southern border wide to celebrate just a small fraction of the songs, musicians, singers from the other side of the border who have given us so much great music. Plus I played the only Frank Sinatra song I can think of where he deliberately sings off key. And to help drive home the point of this week’s show, I also played a song from the new Broadway musical Hadestown, in which Hades, more of a demagogue than demigod, sings about building his wall around Hadestown. Sound chillingly familiar?

PLAYLIST FOR “ST. PATRICK’S DAY PARTY 2019”

16 Mar

It’s been a Turntable For One St. Patrick’s Day tradition for me to play some jazz singers from Ireland, a few Irish-American (or at least half-Irish-American) singers and musicians, and – always a highlight – for me to eat some traditional Irish food on the air – which, of course, means  a bowl of Lucky Charms. And, as if hearing me struggle and choke wasn’t incentive enough, I made this year’s party a celebration of the songs of Jimmy McHugh, the wonderful Irish-American composer.

PLAYLIST FOR “KICKING IT ‘OLD’ SCHOOL” (2.9.19)

10 Feb

I don’t get it why people are so negative about the word, old. Some of our greatest songwriters have used that word in some of their greatest songs. And some of our youngest singers are giving new voice to these old songs. I say, this grievous mistake must be corrected. (Or am I just up to my old tricks, trying to fill two hours with music? You be the judge…)
